Dr Alistair Bromhead

Alistair is an independent consultant with over 15 years experience of health, safety & environmental issues in the UK. He works around the country providing health, safety and environmental management consultancy services across a range of sectors. He has particular experience in manual handling, noise management and resource efficiency issues. 

Alistair developed the City & Guilds Certificate in Manual Handling Train the Trainer course and is the only trainer in the UK able to offer the qualification - no other course can provide the C&G Certificate.

  • NEBOSH (National Examination Board of Occupational Safety and Health) Diploma in Health and Safety - Parts I&II

Experience 

  • Manual handling train the trainer courses for a wide range of clients in various sectors. Development of the City & Guilds Certificate in Manual Handling Train the Trainer

  • Manual handling risk assessments and train the handler training for a wide range of clients

  • Envirowise – since 1999, Alistair has worked as an Envirowise helpline advisor providing answers to technical queries, conducting “fast-track” resource efficiency audits and "design-track" audits

  • WRAP - the Waste and Resources Action Programme: advisor to the wood waste portfolio responsible for the development of training material and a Code of Practice for the wood recycling industry

  • UEAPME – (European Association for small business which represents around 7 million enterprises) – provision of consultancy advice on draft Eco-label criteria for furniture

  • Noise surveys, risk assessments and on-site consultancy for a wide range of clients

Retained by BFM Ltd - the British Furniture Manufacturers trade body. Responsible for the provision of consultancy services to BFM Limited and 350 member companies including:

  • Operation of an environmental, health and safety advice line to provide technical and legal guidance.

  • Conducting EHS reviews for UK member companies: evaluating legal compliance, environmental performance & risk and the potential for cost savings and improved practices. Over 200 site reviews conducted.

  • Conducting EHS audits for 25 companies in Bulgaria and Romania to evaluate their degree of compliance with EU Directives and make suggestions for improvement

  • Identifying and interpreting forthcoming legislation, with the dissemination of practical advice. Writing guidance notes & monthly newsletter for member companies.

  • Operation of Association of British Insurers approved health and safety certification scheme

  • Provision of a range of monitoring services: noise surveys,  wood dust and solvent personal exposures and local exhaust ventilation testing

  • Representing sectoral interests with regard to proposed and revised legislation

  • Work for Envirowise Programme including researching and writing:

    • GG177  “Reducing Solvent Use in the Furniture Industry”

    • GG340 “Cost savings through low solvent coatings”

  • Developing and managing various research projects and writing the resulting guidance:

    • Promotion of timber waste recycling in the furniture manufacturing sector - for the Waste and Resources Action Programme

    • Evaluation of the market development potential of the waste wood and wood products reclamation and reuse sector - for WRAP

    • Benchmarking solvent use in the UK furniture manufacturing sector - sponsored by Biffaward

    • Benchmarking wood combustion - sponsored by Biffaward  

    • Implications of sustainable development for reproduction furniture manufacturers

  • Retained by FIRA International - the Furniture Industry Research Association for 9 years. Duties include the operation of an environmental review and certification scheme (Club Green), development and maintenance of two guides on environmental and health & safety  law and the implementation of ISO 14001 with member companies

  • Prior to July 1996: working for Environmental Training and Consultancy Ltd with involvement in the development of environmental training programmes for a range of blue chip companies including Ford, Severn Trent and GEC
