Manual handling train the trainer course

  Introduction

This two day City & Guilds accredited course is designed for those who want to become manual handling trainers as well as for those who are already conducting such training but want some fresh ideas and techniques to integrate into their programmes. Both groups will benefit from the confidence generated in their abilities by achieving C&G certification. The course will also be useful to those who need to assess handling risks (often an important attribute for a trainer facing questions about how best to shift something). Please note, the course focuses on the safe handling of materials and goods (rather than people).

Participants receive a unique manual handling instructor's pack with everything required for running manual handling training sessions. As well as a comprehensive course manual with the technical information, participants receive a CD containing suggested programmes for running 1.5 to 3 hour training sessions, hard copies of lesson plans and useful extras such as test and assessment sheets.

The course is the only nationally recognised manual handling train the trainer course for the manufacturing and service industries. Most courses simply use internal certification (a certificate from the training provider) or they have third party certification for a 3 hour manual handling element rather than for the whole train the trainer course (2 days). Alistair Bromhead developed this course and is the only trainer in the UK able to offer the qualification as it is a customised course certified by C&G rather than one which is openly available through other C&G approved trainers (view certificate).

The course can be run in-house (often the best way for 4/5 or more students from a company) or as an open course making it the most cost effective way to cascade safe handling training to the workforce.

  Course aims and objectives

By the end of the course, participants will have the following key competences:

  • Be able to run a 1 hour to 3 hour training session on manual handling

  • Understand how to motivate trainees and ensure the effectiveness of the training

  • Be equipped with a range of training techniques to promote interactivity, motivation and learning

  • Develop a working knowledge of the anatomy of the spine

  • Appreciate the impact on the spine of both good and bad handling technique

  • Be able to explain a prolapsed (slipped) disc - a classic injury caused by poor handling technique

  • Understand the principles of safe handling

  • Be able to explain safe handling to others in a logical and memorable manner

  • Be able to design appropriate training for specific groups of manual handlers

  • Have the confidence to answer commonly occurring questions

  • Understand the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992

  • Be able to perform manual handling risk assessments

Successful completion of the course will result in the City & Guilds Manual Handling Train the Trainer Certificate. Please note, we do not cover patient handling in this course.

Who is the course aimed at? The course is aimed at a wide range of individuals:
  • Managers and supervisors intending to conduct in-house training
  • Consultants and trainers providing services to a range of clients
  • Existing providers of manual handling training who want C&G recognition of their skills

The course is suitable for participants from a wide range of backgrounds. Health and safety management experience as well as training qualifications are useful but are not a pre-requisite as participants will be trained in both the technical and the training related issues.

In-house courses

If you have 4/5 or more staff to be trained, an in-house course should be considered. These can be run on your premises to minimise staffing disruption and enable real life scenarios within your workplace to be considered during the training. Furthermore, dates and times can of course be tailored to your requirements.

The City & Guilds Manual Handling Train the Trainer course costs £1750 + VAT. In addition, there is a fee of £70 + VAT per person for the C&G registration and certification fee. Thus, if you have a group of 7 managers, the total cost  would be £2380 + VAT

Comments from past attendees

"I cannot recommend this course enough! It has substantially reduced my time in preparing overheads, notes and training techniques. Novice and professional alike will gain from this course and from a very knowledgeable instructor."

Ken Attwood, Safety and Fire Consultant

"We already ran an in-house course on manual handling. However, as a result of the C&G Manual Handling Train the Trainer course, we have re-written our own training to include many of the techniques and examples suggested by Alistair. It is now a much more interactive course and our trainers have also been given credibility and confidence through their City and Guilds certification"

Jim Maccall, National Training Manager, Brandon Hire Plc

"I was really impressed and inspired by the course!"

Jill Moore, HR & Office Manager, Seamap (UK) Ltd

"Thank-you very much for the manual handing train the trainer training. The feedback from those attending has been extremely positive and they thoroughly enjoyed the course. I am sure that the skills and knowledge gained will deliver a significant improvement to our health and safety performance"

Rob Bell, Assistant Director (Environmental Maintenance)

Cheltenham Borough Council

Alistair is a very accomplished trainer as the C&G validation shows. He uses varied training techniques and lots of trainee participation to make the course interesting and successful, whatever the previous experience of the participants. He also makes very good use of the available workplace if the course is presented in-house.
Brian Rowe, Assistant H&S advisor, Manchester Metropolitan University

"Great course. Enjoyable, practical and equipped our people with everything they need to deliver in-house manual handling training"

Simon Francis, Training & Development Manager, Sheffield International Venues
